background

in the US alone, millions of people want to be better at drawing, but only a small fraction of them actually develop this skill. this prompted me to try and figure out why – how could i help people develop their drawing skills?

for this concept project, i was tasked with creating an edtech product prototype in just 8 weeks.

my solution

my final product was Mark AI: a mobile web platform that uses artificial intelligence to personalize users' drawing journey.

understanding people who draw

since i was creating an edtech product to help people get better at drawing, i needed to figure out why people pursue drawing in the first place.

i did this through one-on-one user interviews with five people who were currently or previously interested in drawing.

youtube just has too much fluff, and not enough of what i’m really looking for

mapping out the results from my research illustrated a key insight: users were much more likely to draw if their learning experience was tailored to their specific learning goals.

so, how might we make drawing *personalized* for users' specific educational needs?

finding solutions

finding solutions

OK, how might we make learning to draw a personalized experience?...

why not document users’ progress visually, like a fitness tracking app?

but how would we get their data? self-entry? that wouldn’t be very accurate...

what if their drawings could be analyzed with AI (helpful AND trendy)!

selecting features

with a solution in mind, i listed and prioritized the features i wanted to include in the product.

organizing features

with the features narrowed down, i had a pretty good idea of where i thought they should live on my website, but to be sure, i conducted a hybrid card sort to establish the information architecture.

i then broke down my sitemap, user flow, and three task flows that i wanted to fully mock up:

  • create account

  • upload photo

  • using a prompt

task flows

wireflow-ing

finally, it was time for me to start making the wireframes. i sketched them out as flows on paper before moving to digital.

shortly after beginning my sketches, i decided not to design my third task flow, as it was going to balloon the project scope too much.

LOW TO MID-FI wireframes

create an account

low-fidelity sketching helped me explore interaction design, while mid-fidelity helped me think through the visuals and content.

upload drawing

as i moved from lo- to mid-fi, i also added more screens.

branding the product

before moving to high-fidelity, i needed to decide how the product should be branded.

i made a couple mood boards to get a clearer idea for the site’s visual design and my color scheme and icons. i also explored names and logos for my hypothetical company, settling on “Mark” (get it?).

testing the designs

to make sure my designs were really addressing the problem i was intending to solve, i conducted moderated usability testing with six users, revealing two major usability problems.

problem 1

style buttons were confused with text fields, since they look similar

problem 2

users needed more information upfront, since some details appeared later

simpler text fields

more descriptive buttons

more task information

added captions

final design

with my mockups finally finished and tested, i created my final prototype (see in figma)↗︎

next steps

i don't plan to revisit this project any time soon, but if i WERE to make Mark a real product, i would likely start by learning more about the problem space and how it might be developed technologically.

takeaways

explore freely (within your constraints).

because this project was completely conceptual, i was able to take advantage of fewer constraints and ideate ambitious features like AI for my design solution.
